Small Steps

Where children learn in a supportive environment of acceptance.

Centre Philosophy

At Small Steps, we view all children as capable and confident learners. We believe that children construct their own ideas and develop their thinking through social interactions, particularly through tuakana-teina relationships. Tuakana-teina refers to the relationship between an older and younger person, where they learn from one another, through role modelling, observation and guidance.  Therefore, we also place a strong emphasis on building social competence and resilience among our tamariki. Social competence plays an essential role in a child’s holistic development, as their cognitive thought processing is encouraged, they learn empathy and respect for others, as well as promoting self-esteem and confidence in oneself. It allows for children to understand the boundaries of acceptable behaviour and practice, thus encouraging responsive, reciprocal, meaningful relationships with one another. This sets the foundation for an inclusive program, where children can still be affirmed as individuals, but understand that they all have a right to develop and learn in a supportive environment of acceptance.

We endeavour to provide our children with a thoughtful, culturally enriched, emergent curriculum, where children are encouraged to learn through play, with a large focus on fostering creativity and developing connections between the home, centre and local community. We as teachers appreciate the importance of children developing a sense of belonging, so provide children with a safe and secure environment where they know that they have a place and can thrive in, during their early learning journey.

Our aim is to provide a high-quality program for our local community; continuously improving access for children, their parents and whanau and building kinship and mutual respect.

Each individual plays an essential role in contributing to high quality ECE for infants, toddlers, and young children. Therefore, there exists an appreciation amongst all members of our centre community for the different contributions of the teacher, the parent, whanau members and iwi. Each member is valued and supported for their expertise and contribution to the education and overall holistic development of our children.
